Prime Movers
Prime Movers is part of the Flexicare program - a flexible respite program that provides in-home and community-based respite for families, who are the primary caregivers of a family member with dementia.

What is the Prime Movers group?

The Prime Movers group is part of the Flexicare program, which is a flexible respite program that provides in-home and community-based respite for families, who are the primary caregivers of a family member with dementia.

The Flexicare Program provides one-on-one respite and also offers some group activities through the ‘Prime Movers’ social activity group.

What are the aims of Flexicare?

The aims of Flexicare are to:

  • Support the primary caregivers in maintaining their existing care arrangements.
  • Prevent or minimise the usage of more restrictive respite or accommodation options.
  • Complement the existing care arrangements.
  • Maintain daily routines and activities therefore ensuring stability for the individual with dementia.
  • Provide meaningful leisure and social activities.

Who is eligible?

In the Geelong area the Flexicare Program provides respite to up to ten families, who are caring for a family member with dementia and/or challenging behaviours. Allocations are made annually, and existing recipients may apply for the following year.

Individuals with an Extended Aged Care at Home (EACH) package are not eligible to apply.

Priority will be given to families receiving minimal support.

How much does it cost and how much support can we receive?

Allocations of up to 250 hours of respite, per year, can be made. A standard fee of $2.70 per hours is charged for this type of care, but this is negotiable in case of financial hardship.

How can I find out more?

Families and agencies are welcome to make a referral to the program by contacting Gateways Support Services via Contact Us or by phoning 5221 2984.
