Autism Playgroups are designed for families of children, who have recently received a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder and are not yet old enough to attend kindergarten.
What are Gateways Autism Playgroups?
Autism Playgroups are designed for families with children who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, high sensory and communication needs and significant behavioural issues that respond more readily to an intensive supported block program.
Gateways Autism Playgroups are run as a partnership between families and staff, with parents working alongside staff at each session.
Through this ‘hands on’ approach, families will be able to build on their knowledge of autism, and their child, and be able to extend individual skills being addressed in the home.
What support does the program provide?
The program covers the areas of communication, sensory needs, fine and gross motor skills, self care and social skills. Challenging behaviours both at home and in the group will be addressed as they arise.
The playgroup also provides families with regular contact and support with other parents experiencing similar difficulties. Staff will supervise the children during outside play to allow parents the opportunity for a ‘cuppa and chat’ during the final half hour of each session.
It will be a requirement that parents remain on the premises throughout this program, as they, not staff, will be responsible for applying first aid to their child in the event of an accident.
Where are Gateways Autism Playgroups held?
Autism Playgroups are conducted jointly by an occupational therapist and speech pathologist and are run from the Greenville Children’s Centre, Grovedale.
