Gateways’ response to recent claims regarding autism and paracetamol (Tylenol)

At Gateways Support Services, we have proudly supported children, young people and adults with autism and their families for more than 40 years. Founded by Dr Bernie Jenner OAM, our organisation has grown from a small local initiative into a recognised leader in autism services and advocacy across our region.
Recent claims have circulated suggesting a link between autism and the use of paracetamol (Tylenol). We know these claims may cause concern and confusion for families in our community. As an organisation with deep expertise in autism, Gateways wishes to address this directly.
To date, there is no credible scientific evidence establishing a causal link between paracetamol use and autism. Autism is a complex, lifelong neurodevelopmental difference influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors. The scientific community has not found medication such as paracetamol to be a proven cause.
Dr Bernie Jenner OAM, founder of Gateways, has long emphasised the importance of evidence-based understanding. “Autism is part of the broad neurodiversity of the human persona to be celebrated, not a disease with a simplistic ‘cause’ to be ‘cured.”
Gateways CEO Rohan Braddy adds “We want our community to know there is no evidence linking everyday medications like paracetamol to autism. Claims suggesting otherwise are misleading and can cause unnecessary worry. Our priority is to provide clarity, support, and trusted guidance for families.”
Gateways remains committed to standing beside people with autism and their families, offering services and programs that foster belonging, learning and participation. Our focus is, and always will be, on supporting individuals to live fulfilling lives and ensuring families feel informed and empowered.
We encourage families with questions or concerns to speak directly with their healthcare provider and to seek information from trusted, evidence-based sources.
Statement from The Australian Society of Developmental Paediatrics (ASDP):
The Australian Society of Developmental Paediatrics joins reputable clinical and scientific experts worldwide in rejecting the claims of the US Government and President Trump regarding the causes of autism and ADHD, in particular, the association with paracetamol (acetaminophen) use during pregnancy.
