Celebrating 45 years of Gateways: A legacy of care, inclusion and community

Bay Fm Interview

This year marks a significant milestone for Gateways Support Services – 45 years of supporting people with disabilities, their families, and carers across the Geelong region. To celebrate, Gateways CEO Rohan Braddy recently sat down with BayFM’s Mill to reflect on the journey and talk all things 45 years.

For CEO Rohan Braddy, this anniversary is more than just a number. It represents decades of trust, growth, and unwavering commitment to the community.

“Gateways has been part of the Geelong community for four and a half decades,” Rohan shared. “Over that time, we’ve built a strong reputation for trust and high-quality support. Even in recent times, where the NDIS has faced challenges and negative press, we’ve remained steadfast in our role – supporting people and standing by our community.”

From its beginnings as a grassroots initiative to the well-established organisation it is today, Gateways has become a pillar of the community. That journey is a source of immense pride.

“Our whole community is feeling incredibly proud that we’ve been there for the long haul,” Rohan said. “And we’re committed to being here for another 45 years – and beyond.”

A Vision That Started It All

Gateways was founded in 1980 by Dr Bernie Jenner, who recognised a gap in support for families of children with disability. Rather than accepting the lack of services, he took action, – creating what would become the foundation of Gateways Support Services.

“It started as a community-led organisation,” Rohan explained. “Dr Jenner identified a need and chose to do something about it. From the very beginning, Gateways was built on values of care, inclusion and community, and those values remain our bedrock today.”

Evolving with the Community

Over 45 years, the disability sector has seen significant change, and Gateways has evolved alongside it.

“It’s really been our ability to adapt that’s kept us relevant and trusted,” Rohan said. “The sector has been in constant change, mostly for the better”

From the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to shifting family dynamics and rising cost-of-living pressures, Gateways has continued to listen and respond to the needs of its community.

“Our community quite rightly expects more, and we strive every day to do better than we did yesterday, and even better tomorrow.”

Relationships at the Heart

At the core of Gateways’ success is a simple but powerful principle; people come first.

“It’s about building strong relationships,” Rohan said. “Understanding what each person wants and needs and ensuring they are at the centre of everything we do.”

This commitment has helped Gateways strengthen its presence not only in Geelong, but also across Werribee and surrounding regions, while maintaining a consistent focus on quality care and meaningful connection.

Looking Ahead

As Gateways celebrates 45 years, the focus remains firmly on the future, continuing to support, adapt, and grow alongside the community it serves.
