A look back: The power of early inclusion programs

July 13, 2026

As we celebrate 45 years of Gateways, we’ve been reflecting on the programs that helped shape who we are today. One of those special memories is Mini Mates, our early inclusion program for children aged 8 and under.

While Mini Mates is no longer running as a standalone program, its spirit lives on through our recreation programs today. And the impact it had still stays with us.

Mini Mates was about giving young children the chance to build confidence, try new things, and feel part of a group, often for the very first time. Through simple activities like playing games, sharing meals, or going on outings, children were learning important life skills without even realising it. And it was those small moments that meant everything.

For some children, joining a group, asking for help, or managing a transition without becoming overwhelmed was a huge step. What might seem small from the outside was often a big win for families who had been doing it tough.

Because the program was based on real-life experiences, the progress didn’t just stay in the session, it showed up at home, at school, and in everyday life. Children began building friendships, trying new environments, and gaining the confidence to take part in the world around them.

One parent shared how her daughter came home from Mini Mates “tired but happy”, proud of what she had achieved, even something as simple as getting better at riding a bike. Those moments built confidence, independence, and joy.

Mini Mates also created space for connection. Families saw what their children could do, not just what they struggled with. That shift brought relief, hope, and a sense that things could get easier over time.

At Gateways, we’ve always known that real change happens through relationships. For many children, especially those facing challenges or uncertainty, feeling safe and understood is the first step. From there, everything else can grow, trust, confidence, and a willingness to try.

What’s most special is that these connections don’t just disappear. Over the years, we’ve seen young people grow up and still stay connected. They come back, say hello, and share their achievements. That’s when the true impact is realised, it’s not just in the program, it’s in the relationships built along the way.

Mini Mates may be part of our history, but its legacy continues. Today, across our recreation programs, we still see those same small moments, and the big difference they make. Because when we support children early, create safe spaces, and focus on connection, we’re not just running programs, we’re helping build confidence, belonging, and brighter futures.
