From early support to self advocacy: Michaela's journey

July 23, 2026

For 45 years, Gateways has walked alongside children, families and individuals as they build skills, confidence and independence that last a lifetime.

For one local family, that journey began more than a decade ago when they first reached out for support for their daughter, Michaela.

Through Gateways' Early Intervention services, Michaela and her family accessed support, guidance and opportunities that would help shape her future. While therapies were provided externally, Gateways played an important role in helping the family navigate assessments, access support and build the confidence to move forward.

Looking back, Michaela's parent says one of the most powerful moments came when someone finally listened.

"It was the first time someone truly listened to us. Someone saw the same things we were seeing in Michaela, validated our concerns, and helped us understand that what we were experiencing wasn't something we had to navigate alone."

That understanding became the foundation for a journey focused on helping Michaela develop skills and confidence.

Building the foundations

From an early age, Michaela worked with therapists to strengthen her communication, social and emotional skills.

Together they focused on practical goals that would help her navigate everyday life, including learning how to start conversations, join in play, build friendships and ask for help when she needed it.

The progress didn't happen overnight. It came through years of support, practice and encouragement from both professionals and family members.

For Michaela's family, one milestone stands out above all others.

"Mum, I have an actual friend."

Those words, spoken excitedly after school one day, were the result of years of hard work.

"There were tears of joy because we knew just how hard she had worked to get to that point."

Even more special, that friendship continues today.

Finding her voice

As Michaela grew, the focus shifted from social development to independence, self understanding and self advocacy.

Early intervention helped her understand her strengths, challenges and unique way of experiencing the world. It also gave her the confidence to communicate her needs and seek support when required. Rather than viewing her differences as barriers, Michaela learned to see them as part of who she is.

"Her differences aren't something to hide or be ashamed of, they are her superpowers."

Those skills have continued to serve her throughout her education.

One particularly proud moment for her family was seeing Michaela recognised at her primary school graduation for her advocacy efforts. She was acknowledged for standing up for students who didn't always have the confidence or opportunity to speak for themselves.

Looking forward

Today, Michaela is preparing for the next chapter of her life, with a growing focus on employment, independence and future opportunities.

Her family believes the support she received in her early years laid the foundation for everything that followed.

"Early intervention wasn't just about helping our daughter reach developmental milestones. It laid the foundations for life."

As Gateways celebrates 45 years of supporting individuals and families across our community, stories like Michaela's remind us that early support can create lasting change, building confidence, fostering belonging and helping people discover the strengths that make them who they are.
