For 45 years, Gateways has worked alongside families, educators, schools and community services to support children to achieve their goals.
At the heart of this work is a simple belief, the best outcomes happen when people work together.
One Gateways team member has spent years supporting children and families through a range of roles including Early Intervention Advisor, Preschool Field Officer and facilitator of family support programs. Throughout that time, she has seen first hand how partnerships between families, early learning services, schools and support providers can transform a child's future.
A child surrounded by support
One family was referred to Gateways when their kindergarten aged child was experiencing significant challenges.
The child struggled with emotional regulation, attention and safety awareness, often attempting to leave supervised environments and finding it difficult to participate with peers.
The experience was overwhelming for everyone involved.
Their family worried about their child's safety, community participation and future transition to school.
Through regular visits with the family and collaboration with kindergarten educators, Gateways helped bring together a team focused on understanding the child's needs and creating positive pathways forward.
Together, they developed strategies to support safety, explored assessment and therapy options, and sought additional funding supports.
Most importantly, everyone shared a common goal: helping the child succeed.
The difference a welcoming school can make
A significant turning point came when the local primary school became involved.
Rather than focusing on barriers, school staff focused on possibilities.
The school worked closely with the family and support team, helping to arrange funding and prepare appropriate supports well before the child started school.
Their welcoming approach helped ease the family's concerns and created confidence that their child could succeed in an educational environment.
"It was wonderful that they added to the team around the child in the most positive of ways," recalled the Gateways staff member.
Empowering families and communities
Partnerships aren't only about services working together. They are also about helping families find confidence in their own voice.
Throughout the process, the family connected with community programs, developed relationships with other families and learned how to advocate for their child's needs.
Over time, that confidence grew far beyond the early years.
The child's mother eventually pursued a career in early childhood education herself, inspired by her family's experiences and her desire to support other children and families.
Years later, she shared how the support received before school entry had helped her family move from uncertainty to hope.
Creating lasting impact
Today, the child is thriving as a young person who confidently advocates for the needs of neurodiverse students and has received recognition for championing positive change within their school community.
Their story highlights what can happen when families, educators, schools and support services come together around a shared vision.
It is a reminder that early intervention is never about any one person or organisation working in isolation. It is about partnerships built on trust, respect and shared goals.
