In 2008, Gateways was asked to support a young person who didn’t fit within the existing system.
A 15 year old boy was unable to attend school, and his complex behaviours meant he was excluded from traditional day programs. At the time, there were few, if any flexible options available to support someone with his needs.
But rather than turning away, Gateways leaned in and together, a new path was created.
That moment marked the beginning of Social Connect, a program grounded in the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, participate and belong.
Seeing the gap and responding
Social Connect was born from a clear and urgent need. Many people with complex behaviour support needs were being excluded, not because they didn’t want to engage, but because the systems around them weren’t designed to support them effectively. Traditional group environments could be overwhelming or unsafe, leaving individuals and families without viable options.
Gateways recognised this gap, and responded. Together with families and clients, a different approach emerged.
One that centred on flexibility, individualisation, and a commitment to meeting people where they are. Social Connect was built on a simple but powerful principle:
Support should adapt to the person, not the other way around.
This moment reflects a defining part of Gateways’ 45-year journey, listening, evolving, and creating new pathways when they don’t yet exist.
Building confidence, connection and belonging
From the beginning, Social Connect has been deeply connected to community. Participants are supported to engage in real-life experiences, from sailing programs like Sailability, to catching public transport, shopping, bushwalking, and spending time in local spaces. These aren’t just activities; they are meaningful opportunities to build skills, independence and confidence alongside dedicated staff, within welcoming communities.
With the right support in place, people begin to reconnect, with routines, with relationships, and with a sense of identity. As confidence grows, so does participation, creating a powerful ripple effect.
Expanding what’s possible
For many clients, Social Connect has provided a pathway back into community life, at a time when they had been excluded from it.
It has helped individuals feel seen, valued, and capable. It has supported families to feel hopeful about the future. And it has challenged expectations of what’s possible when support is flexible and person-centred. This is the impact of working together.
Together with clients, shaping their own goals and journeys.
Together with families, building trust and shared understanding.
Together with staff, bringing creativity, care and commitment.
Together with community, where inclusion becomes reality.
As one reflection captures:
“When we create the right support around a person, we can expand what is possible for them, and that ripple effect can be life changing."
Social Connect began with one young person, and a decision not to turn away. Today, it stands as part of a much larger story. A story of 45 years of listening, learning and growing alongside the people and families we support, the most meaningful progress happens when we move forward, together.
