National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering - recognising the millions of people who generously give their time to support others and strengthen communities.
In 2026, the theme “Your Year to Volunteer” invites everyone to take that next step, whether it’s your first time volunteering or a continuation of your journey, because every contribution matters.
Celebrating the heart of our Community
At Gateways Support Services, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. For 45 years, they have helped create opportunities for people with disability or additional needs to connect, build friendships, and experience a true sense of belonging.
From supporting social programs and events to contributing behind the scenes, our volunteers play a vital role in creating inclusive, connected lives across Greater Geelong. Their impact goes far beyond the moment, it builds confidence, connection, and community.
This National Volunteer Week, we proudly say: we see you, we thank you, and we celebrate you.
Real people. Real impact.
Behind every program, event, and connection is a volunteer with a story.
People like Jacquie, who began as a volunteer and is now Chair of the Gateways Board, using her skills to guide meaningful impact. Sue, who turned her passion into long-term fundraising support through the Gateways Auxiliary, that has helped countless clients. And volunteers like Sophia, David, Helen, and Hugo, each bringing their time, energy, and personality to create positive experiences for others.
Jacquie
Jacquie was introduced to Gateways Support Services through a former volunteer. She is now the Chair of our Board of Management, who are members of the local community dedicating their time behind-the-scenes to empowering our clients to live the life they choose. Jacquie has been utilising her accounting background to ensure Gateways remains impactful for another 45 years and she encourages others to consider volunteering, as her experience with us has helped her to develop new skills.
Sue
Sue (Dr Home) was introduced to Gateways Support Services through her work as a general practitioner. She was inspired to initiate and lead an auxiliary of her friends to dedicate their time towards fundraising for our organisation. Sue’s generous contribution throughout the years is far reaching and has directly helped support many of our clients through programs, services, and equipment. She encourages others to consider volunteering and suggests it may offer retirees an opportunity to find purpose.
Sophia
Sophia was introduced to Gateways Support Services through her work at Beyond Bank. She volunteered as a corporate representative at both our Charity Golf Day and the Gateways Easter Family Fun Festival earlier this year. Sophia’s fun-loving personality allowed her to easily connect with members of our wider community, and she encourages others to consider volunteering, as she found her experience to be very fulfilling.
David
David was introduced to Gateways Support Services through his partner. He volunteered at the recent Gateways Easter Family Fun Festival and made sure the mini golf activity ran like a well-oiled machine. David enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people from our community, and he encourages others to consider volunteering, as his experience with us was a lot of fun.
Helen
Helen joined Gateways Support Services after responding to one of our volunteer call outs for our Christmas gift-wrapping fundraiser at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre. She volunteered during some of the busiest shifts and went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly! Helen’s charitable spirit has her already crafting paper bows from last year’s wrapping paper for this year's Christmas gift wrapping fundraiser.
Hugo
Hugo was introduced to Gateways Support Services through his studies with The Gordon. He recently volunteered with our Recreation team for the School Holiday Programs. Hugo’s passion for skating and surfing allowed him to actively engage with our younger clients, and he encourages others to consider volunteering, as his experience with us was very educational.
Their stories remind us that volunteering isn’t just about giving, it’s about connecting, learning, and growing.
