Denzel’s Journey with Gateways

In one of Gateways Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes in Geelong, Denzel is thriving with the right mix of safety, independence and support.
For Denzel, the move into Gateways SIL has been a positive step towards greater independence. His journey to independence wasn’t always easy. At his previous home, safety concerns sometimes limited his freedom, but today, Denzel is in an environment that balances safety, independence, and support.
Independence with the right support
SIL with Gateways means more than accommodation for Denzel it’s about providing the tools and environment for him to live as independently as possible. With caring staff available around the clock, Denzel can safely pursue the activities he loves with confidence, whether it be outings with Social Connect to music sessions at home.
A supportive community
SIL at Gateways also means being part of a community. At his new home, Denzel has developed deep and meaningful friendships with staff and fellow residents. Because pets aren’t possible where Denzel lives, he has found another way to connect with through regular visits to the local dog park. These outings have become a highlight of his week, giving him the chance to meet dogs and their owners as well as other community members. Denzel’s warm personality and infectious smile make him a familiar and welcome presence, and these visits give him a sense of belonging within the community.
The value of supported independent living
Denzel’s story is one example of how SIL with Gateways can support people to grow in independence and connection. For Denzel, home is not just accommodation, it’s the foundation of greater independence, a space where he can grow, connect, and truly be himself.
