What we offer

Carer and Parent Support

Support, connection and guidance for carers and parents of people with disability

Supporting someone with a disability can be deeply rewarding, but it can also feel challenging or isolating at times. Gateways offers free Carer and Parent Support services through our Strengthening Parent Support Program (SPSP) and the Caring for YOU initiative. Both are designed to provide connection, understanding and practical guidance for carers and parents at every stage of their journey.

The Strengthening Parent Support Program (SPSP) is a free Victorian Government–funded program supporting parents and carers of children aged 0–18 with disability, developmental delay, additional needs, or complex health care needs.

Delivered in the Barwon region by Gateways Support Services, the program provides peer connection, practical information, and guidance for carers. No referral, diagnosis, or NDIS plan is required.

The program provides:

  • Facilitated peer support groups

  • Information and education sessions relevant to caring and wellbeing

  • One-to-one support, tailored to help navigate services and access resources

  • Opportunities to build connections with other carers

Eligibility:

Open to parents and carers of children aged 0–18 who have disability, developmental delay, additional needs, or complex health care needs, living in the Barwon region.

No referral, diagnosis, affiliation with Gateways or NDIS plan is required.

Funding

The Strengthening Parent Support Program is funded by the Victorian Government through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH).

The Caring for YOU Project is designed especially for people in unpaid caring roles, those supporting a family member, friend or loved one.

Supporting people in unpaid caring roles

It supports carers of all ages and backgrounds, including people caring for someone with disability, mental health challenges, chronic illness, ageing‑related needs, or other support requirements. The project recognises that while caring can be rewarding, it can also be demanding and, at times, isolating.

Building connection and community

Caring for YOU brings carers together in safe, welcoming spaces where they can connect with others who understand their experience. By sharing stories and listening to one another, carers can feel less alone and more supported.

A holistic approach to wellbeing

The project reflects Gateways’ holistic approach to care, recognising that carers need both practical supports and meaningful connections. By strengthening emotional and social support, Caring for YOU helps carers look after themselves as well as others.

Time to rest and recharge

Low‑cost retreats offer carers the chance to slow down, rest and reconnect in a supportive environment. These experiences encourage carers to prioritise their own wellbeing and return feeling refreshed and supported.

Programs are run at various times throughout the year, with registrations opening when sessions are announced.
