Creating community connection, inclusion and accessibility

This week, Jandi from our Community Engagement team spoke to Mil from BayFM about the upcoming Gateways Easter Family Fun Festival—an event designed to bring people together, celebrate inclusion, and create a day of fun for everyone.
“It’s a relaxed community event where people can connect, have fun and feel supported,” Jandi explained. The festival is open to people with disability, their friends, families, carers, and networks, and is all about creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
So, what can visitors expect on the day? “There’ll be live entertainment throughout the day, including dance groups, cultural performances, a show from Dan the Magic Man, and live music from The Sweethearts.” But that’s not all, kids will love the hands-on activities, from mini golf and face painting to balloon art, arcade games, and creative cooking and decorating activities.
This year, a Carer Wellness Hub will provide a calm space for carers to take a moment to recharge, connect with others, and feel supported. Attendees can also meet local community heroes from Victoria Police and Victoria Ambulance adding an extra layer of community connection to the day.
Community support is at the heart of events like this. Jandi shared that the festival has been brought to life thanks to Beyond Bank as the main stage sponsor, support from the City of Greater Geelong Community Grant, G-Force Employment Solutions, and other local partners. “Events like this really highlight how local businesses and organisations come together to support the disability community,” Jandi said.
When asked what she’s looking forward to on the day, Jandy said it’s seeing the community come together: “For me, it’s seeing the disability community come and really thrive and enjoy themselves.”
The Gateways Easter Family Fun Festival will be held at Norlane ARC on Sunday, 29th March, from 10am to 3pm, with a quiet hour from 10am to 11am for those who may prefer a calmer environment. And the best part? Entry is free!
