Creative Arts Therapy is an evidence-based, therapeutic support that uses art and the creative process to explore feelings, improve self-confidence, build life skills and reduce anxiety.
At Gateways Support Services in Western Melbourne, we believe that everyone should be encouraged to live their most creative lives, regardless of ability or age. Art Therapy has been proven to promote mental and emotional wellbeing, assisting people with a disability to reflect, process and communicate in an alternative way.
Art-based therapy can have many benefits for someone on NDIS with a disability, including:
- Promoting self-awareness and self-expression
- Alternative ways to communicate
- New skills around art-making
- Increase self-esteem and confidence
- Decrease stress and anxiety
- Safe exploration of mental health issues
- Tools for self-soothing and emotional regulation
- Develop fine motor skills
- Improve interpersonal skills
As art therapy can benefit people with disability in numerous ways, it can be accessed as a support through an NDIS budget. Under the NDIS, art therapy is an allied health service and can be accessed similarly to speech therapy or physiotherapy, under ‘Therapeutic Supports’.
Art therapy can include painting, craft, colouring, clay or collage. Through semi-guided therapy sessions, participants will work collaboratively with our Creative Art Therapists to navigate difficult thoughts and feelings while building self-awareness and confidence through artistic expression.
Art Therapy is suitable for everyone, with support offered to NDIS participants of all ages. No art-making experience or skill is required, as it is the creating itself that forms the therapeutic process.
Our team has vast experience in art therapy and supporting people with a disability and can tailor the sessions to help participants reach their goals.
Gateways Arts Therapists are qualified with Masters degree level qualifications. They are all registered with ANZACATA.
