Gateways Social Connect Program, ready for what’s next?
Our very own Community Services and Accommodation Program Manager, Ebony, recently joined BayFM’s Bay Spotlight to shine a light on one of Gateways most exciting programs, Social Connect.
Ebony shares how Social Connect is helping young school leavers with a disability bridge the gap between school and adulthood by increasing their independence, building friendships, and developing life skills through fun, community-based weekday activities.
For a lot of young people finishing school is a major milestone, a time of excitement, change, and new possibilities. But for many young people with a disability, it can also bring questions: What comes next? How can I find a meaningful, supported path forward?
That’s where Gateways Social Connect comes in. Our unique program, based here in Geelong, is designed to help school leavers take their next steps with confidence, connection, and purpose.
For school leavers the transition can be both exciting and overwhelming. Social Connect offers a supportive, engaging, and social environment that helps guide young people from school into what comes next. The program provides a smooth transition from the structure of school to a new routine focused on personal growth. With a strong focus on building life skills and confidence, participants continue learning in a safe and nurturing environment.
Each program is shaped around the individual, from cooking and sport to volunteering or art, young people are supported to explore their interests and discover what brings them joy as they take that step into independence and opportunity.
By focusing on the clients strengths and abilities and helping them develop skills at their own pace, Social Connect supports young adults to feel proud of their progress and excited about their future as they move into adulthood.
